Are the Cicadas Coming to Texas?

Social media and news shows are both covering the double brood of cicadas set to emerge this year. The last time this double-hatch phenomenon happened was 1803, and it won’t happen again until 2245.

If you’re worried about a cicada onslaught on our trees, rest easy. Central Texas is outside the affected zone. The rare 2024 double hatch will primarily impact Illinois and a handful of neighboring states.

Central Texas Tree Pests

While we won’t be swarmed with cicadas (any more than usual), our central Texas trees are not free from other pest threats.

• Tiny stipplers target the undersides of leaves on oaks, cypresses, and arborvitaes.
• Destructive chewers leave visible damage on cypress, oak, juniper, and others.
• Suckers (eg. scales and aphids) encourage sooty mold and twig dieback.
• Gall makers disfigure trees with odd growths.
• Borers – including the Emerald Ash Borer – drill into trees and undermine their health.
• Bark beetles can severely damage pine trees. They can also spread Dutch Elm Disease.
• Sap Beetles carry the dreaded Oak Wilt fungus, and spread it to neighboring trees.

Each of these pests presents a unique threat to the well-being of our trees, affecting everything from aesthetics to the overall health and safety of our landscapes.
